STRIKE your Wife? I don’t think so. A Deeper Dive into Surah Nisa 4:34. #doraba

This is my note for this video: https://youtu.be/IZfBHxCWEAk

I have understood it differently for a while

Workings

2 plus 2 workings. 3 plus 1 etc

So that it won’t be said that we are watering down the religion

Or to cater to pander to the west in any way, this workings have to be done

I have understood it differently for a while

Q4 V128 – wives can seek divorce too.

Korra –

This video is going to be the first in a series of videos that looks into this verse, and this word.

What I mainly do on this channel – shorts, and you’ll see me reference them, so you can always dive into the wormhole of words.

Unlike English words that are terms, terminating ideas; Arabic words in their true sense are concepts.

The verse:

Q4 V34:

“Men are in charge of women by [right of] what Allah has given one over the other and what they spend [for maintenance] from their wealth. So righteous women are devoutly obedient, guarding in [the husband’s] absence what Allah would have them guard. But those [wives] from whom you fear arrogance – [first] advise them; [then if they persist], forsake them in bed; and [finally], strike them. But if they obey you [once more], seek no means against them. Indeed, Allah is ever Exalted and Grand.”

The first reality that jumps at one is how striking them is suppose to better the situation, right? Especially since she can also seek divorce.

Anyway!

To touch:

There are 4 other words that have been translated to To Strike in the Quran: yubtish, urkud, jalid, waqudh.

Objects:

War badr uhud Q3 V165&166 – sawb – swords, weapons

Thunder struck Q4 V153 – Akhadh

To hit animals Q5 V3 – Mawqudhat – Waqudh. Object – weapon.

Flog 24 zinaV2 and accuseV4 – jalid. Object – Whip.

Rhetorical question –

Body parts: Intensity levels.

Q20 V97 – samiri – la misaas

“…whose oil will almost glow even if untouched by fire…” Q24 V35 tamsasHu. Masasa. Slight touch. So that we cannot construe doraba to mean ‘slight touch’ because if that’s what Allah meant, he would have used tamsasHu as in 24 V35.

One can say the conversation can actually stop here since the prevalent argument is that the Strike has to be slight and not violent.

Strike the ground feet. Ayub. Q38 V42 Urkud. Dod. Feet. Body parts.

Ibrahim’s wife struck her own face Q51 V29 – sawkat – her hands

Punch Q28 V19 Yabtish. Toh. Fist. Body parts.

Deadly punch Q28 V15 wakaz FIST

RECAP the above levels before moving on.

So if doraba was not used to describe any of the above STRIKE OR TOUCHES, and that encapsulates every kind of strike imaginable, then what does doraba mean?

If one cannot use weapons or bodily parts to inflict a STRIKE on someone, then what other form is one suppose to use to ‘strike’?

Now, if we say it doesn’t mean Strike, and it doesn’t mean Strike, then what does it mean?

Travel:

2 V273 – Fuqara. Faqir.

[Charity is] for the poor who have been restricted for the cause of Allah, unable to move about in the land. An ignorant [person] would think them self-sufficient because of their restraint, but you will know them by their [characteristic] sign. They do not ask people persistently [or at all]. And whatever you spend of good – indeed, Allah is Knowing of it.

3 V156 – traveled through the land. Wdnt die.

O you who have believed, do not be like those who disbelieved and said about their

brothers when they traveled through the land or went out to fight, “If they had been with us, they would not have died or have been killed,” so Allah makes that [misconception] a regret within their hearts. And it is Allah who gives life and causes death, and Allah is Seeing of what you do.

4 V94 – go forth in the cause of Allah. Ftbynu.

O you who have believed, when you go forth [to fight] in the cause of Allah, investigate; and do not say to one who gives you [a greeting of] peace “You are not a believer,” aspiring for the goods of worldly life; for with Allah are many acquisitions. You [yourselves] were like that before; then Allah conferred His favor upon you, so investigate. Indeed Allah is ever, with what you do, Acquainted.

4 V101 – travel throughout the land. Qasr.

And when you travel throughout the land, there is no blame upon you for shortening the prayer, [especially] if you fear that those who disbelieve may disrupt [or attack] you. Indeed, the disbelievers are ever to you a clear enemy.

5 V106 – traveling through the land. Wasiy.

O you who have believed, testimony [should be taken] among you when death approaches one of you at the time of bequest – [that of] two just men from among you or two others from outside if you are traveling through the land and the disaster of death should strike you(sawb). Detain them after the prayer and let them both swear by Allah if you doubt [their testimony, saying], “We will not exchange our oath for a price, even if he should be a near relative, and we will not withhold the testimony of Allah. Indeed, we would then be of the sinful.”

73 V20 – traveling through the land. Qymlyl.

Indeed, your Lord knows, [O Muhammad], that you stand [in prayer] almost two thirds of the night or half of it or a third of it, and [so do] a group of those with you. And Allah determines [the extent of] the night and the day. He has known that you [Muslims] will not be able to do it and has turned to you in forgiveness, so recite what is easy [for you] of the Qur’an. He has known that there will be among you those who are ill and others traveling throughout the land seeking [something] of the bounty of Allah and others fighting for the cause of Allah. So recite what is easy from it and establish prayer and give zakah and loan Allah a goodly loan. And whatever good you put forward for yourselves – you will find it with Allah. It is better and greater in reward. And seek forgiveness of Allah. Indeed, Allah is Forgiving and Merciful.

Notice who is using doraba to describe traveling in all of the verses above? Allah! I’ll let that sink in…

So what does doraba classically mean?

Doraba means to journey in an effort to present or show something; to bring upon: It signifies EFFORT, painstaking effort, toil, despite how hard it is, despite the fear you encounter on the journey, you protect yourself, the message, or thing…

We are expected to journey to present the message to them. Technically, if one pays close attention, one will realize that there’s no way to present the message to them without journeying.

DorabAllahu mathala – Quran. Mosquito, flies, trees, foams of the sea, light upon light etc

So when Allah says wadrib lahum mathala- it means, travel in an effort to show, present, or bring upon – one can say that the Quran is being doraba-d since Jubril travels to present it to us. 24 places.

So that Doraba here means to travel back to the bed that you’ve done Hijrah from – return to them, to go back to the bed that one has done Hijra from. Hijrah? Yop.

HIJR: same hijrah

So you see the traveling theme? It makes sense that if you do Hijrah, you’d have to travel back to be able to present one’s self – doraba. How perfect are Allah’s words. Allahu Akbar! Perfectly used.

How far away can one go?

And for how long?

And he was the best to his wives, and he instructs us to be the best to our wives; the best of you are those who are the best to their wives. says we should be.

Prophet sleeping on straws in a separate room.

In those days it was rumored that Ghassan, (a tribe living in Sham) was getting prepared their horses to invade us.

Q33 V28

O Prophet, say to your wives, “If you should desire the worldly life and its adornment, then come, I will provide for you and give you a gracious release.

Q33 V29

But if you should desire Allah and His

Messenger and the home of the Hereafter – then indeed, Allah has prepared for the doers of good among you a great reward.”

Note that he didn’t go back to them smacking or punching them.

Go back to their beds –

Soft and happy return

Hard and sad return

Travel back to the bed, and present one’s self on the bed, As a show of forgiveness, settlement, and reconciliation because an agreement has been reached or made.

Or it may be that an agreement has not been made, but one presents one’s self on the bed perhaps TO see if they’ll have one and so it serves as them now cooperating and now accepting of the terms they were in dispute about.

Travel back to the bed, and present one’s self on the bed, despite how hard it may be

Madohji’ – dohji’ – Beds – 32 V16 – arise from their beds to supplicate to their Lord.

3 V154 – those who death has been decreed would have come out to their death beds.

Not beating children arguments:

Hadith on the subject

Command (amr) your children to pray when they become seven years old, and beat (doraba) them for it (prayer) when they become ten years old; and arrange their beds (to sleep) separately.

Q5 V18 – If you are children of Allah, why does Allah punish you?

Plus, the prophet is known to have never hit any of his children, adopted children or children that were put in his care.

Q3 V104 – amr bil maruf wa yanHawna anil munkar

Q3 V104

And let there be [arising] from you a nation inviting to [all that is] good, enjoining (amr) what is right and forbidding (yanHawna) what is wrong, and those will be the successful.

Q3 V110

You are the best nation produced [as an example] for mankind. You enjoin (amr) what is right and forbid (yanHawna) what is wrong and believe in Allah. If only the People of the Scripture had believed, it would have been better for them. Among them are believers, but most of them are defiantly disobedient.

Q9 V71

The believing men and believing women are allies of one another. They enjoin (amr) what is right and forbid (yanHawna) what is wrong and establish prayer and give zakah and obey Allah and His Messenger. Those – Allah will have mercy upon them. Indeed, Allah is Exalted in Might and Wise.

Q20 V132 – enjoin prayer on your family. Amr.

And enjoin (amr) prayer upon your family [and people] and be steadfast therein. We ask you not for provision; We provide for you, and the [best] outcome is for [those of] righteousness.

Amr – boulder, marker, landmark, hill, mountain

To give pointers towards maruf

To make them see the landmarks and let them know that to not follow your pointers will mean that they’ll not get to their destination.

Now check this theme out; remember the hijrah and doraba theme?

YanHawna – Nun, Ha, Ya: Cliff

It first means to not put boulders or landmarks that leads to munkar.

It also means to create systems that creates Cliffs on the path to munkar

To put systems in place that makes it impossible to get to munkar

Now back to the Hadith: now that we know what amr and doraba means, do you also see the theme here also?

Which means that at 7, you give them pointers, advise them, make them start seeing to take a right when they get to that boulder; BUT from 10 onwards, you take them to pray.

And with the Quran saying Amr, it means that even when one starts taking them, one must still continue to do Amr of solat to them.

Hadith Doraba project? Anyone? Instead of talking down those that don’t want to take Hadith even though I don’t know how a Muslim can practice their religion without, we must invest elaborate serious scholarly works even in this age of ours to put out very close in intent translations of the Quran and the Hadith.
